Replace high-impact greenhouse gases from our products

At the end of 2019, we announced a plan to start replacing high-impact greenhouse gases from our products containing refrigerants and four years on we had phased out these gases in 97% of our appliances.

Leading the cooling industry in climate action

A global phase out of climate-warming greenhouses gases can avoid up to 0.4°C of global warming by 2100,* according to the International Energy Agency. One billion people will be displaced or forced to endure insufferable heat for every 1°C global temperature rise if we don’t act as a planet. **

As a leader in sustainability, it’s important that we play our part and in 2019, we announced a plan to start replacing gases with high global warming potential (GWP) from our appliances. This included gases from refrigerators and tumble driers to wine storage appliances and air conditioners. If local legislation or safety requirements did not allow this, an F-gas with the lowest GWP was used. The plan was part of our commitment to the Cool Coalition initiative, which is a global initiative led by the UN Environment Programme.

We’re proud to say that by the end of 2023, we had replaced high-impact greenhouse gases from 97% of our products containing refrigerants and insulation foams.

Our efforts have not gone unnoticed. The latest report from the Carbon Trust and UN Cool Coalition on cooling suppliers released in December 2023 stated that Electrolux Group leads the pack in terms of climate action in the cooling segment.

We will continue to work together with our regional and international partners to overcome the remaining legislative and market barriers that are preventing the global phase out of high-impact greenhouse gases. This involves raising awareness of low-impact refrigerants that are already being safely used in appliances around the world.

We’re encouraging other companies in our industry to join us as we share the same responsibility.
